Poker is a card game in which players place bets (representing money) into a central pot. The highest hand wins the pot. Each player must also place an ante (a fixed amount that varies depending on the game). Some poker games have multiple betting intervals.
Generally, the dealer begins the game by passing out a set number of cards. Depending on the game, the cards may be dealt face-up or face-down. Then a series of betting rounds occurs, with players having the option to Fold, Call or Raise.
When a player chooses to call, they make a bet of the same amount as the player before them in the betting round. If they raise, they increase the amount of their bet. If they decide to check, they pass on the opportunity to bet and lose their right to compete for the pot.
It’s important to understand the role of position in poker. Playing in late position gives you more information about your opponents’ hands than playing in early position, which makes it easier to bluff and make good value bets.
