Basic Rules of Poker

The cards are dealt face-up. Each player is given two cards. The dealer deals out a total of seven cards. The player to the left of the button is required to post a small blind.

The player to the left of the button is also required to post a big blind. Depending on the game, players may have to make forced bets. These bets are usually small. They may be blind bets or ante bets.

When the player to the left of the button makes a bet, each player to the left of him must “call” or fold. If a player does not fold, he is said to “drop.” Depending on the game, this means that he will lose any chips in the pot.

The most basic hand to make is a straight flush. This is a hand of five cards of the same suit in any order.
