What Is a Slot?

Slot

A slot is a narrow opening, and it can have various functions. It may serve as a receiving area, or it may represent a position in a sequence, or it may refer to a job opening or assignment. As an example, the slot in an airplane’s wing allows for better airflow.

Originally, slot machines were installed as a diversion for casual gamers. Since they don’t require a high level of gambling expertise, they are incredibly popular, generating as much as 60 percent of the annual gaming revenue in the United States. Today, a slot machine may include multiple reels, each containing a different symbol.

A slot receiver is a receiver who can line up on either side of the field, and sometimes a team will use multiple slot receivers on the field at once. This position is sometimes referred to as Inside Slot or Outside Slot. Likewise, a slot cornerback is also known as a Nickel cornerback, after the nickel package consists of extra defensive backs.

BigQuery is able to use multiple slots concurrently, and the amount of slots each query consumes is determined by its complexity. BigQuery automatically evaluates the capacity of each slot, and pauses them as needed.
