Writing About Poker

Poker is a card game played between two or more people. The game is fast paced and the players bet chips (representing money) into the pot in the middle of the table during each hand. At the end of each hand, the highest hand wins the pot. Each player starts with 2 cards and then aims to make the best 5 card “hand” using those cards and the five community cards.

The game is played in rounds and the winner of each round gets a pot of money that’s 29 less than his or her stake (plus any chips that he or she put into the pot). The winning hand must contain a pair, a straight, a flush, or a full house. The high card rule breaks ties in the event of two equal hands.

Interesting writing isn’t about telling someone what you think happened – it’s about describing what happens and why. Personal anecdotes about your experiences playing poker can be interesting, but they won’t be as effective as a detailed account of how you won or lost a pot against your opponents.

It’s important to know your limits when you’re writing about Poker. Don’t get caught up in your ego and try to play with stakes that you can’t afford to lose, and don’t be afraid to fold when you don’t have a good enough hand. This will keep you from making bad decisions at the table.
