A slot is a narrow opening in a board, card, or other object. A slot is also a position. In the game of hockey, the slot is a place where the puck can be dropped or passed into a scoring area. It is located between the faceoff circles. A slot is also the fourth position on a flying display. Slot is related to the Latin verb sleutana, which means “to receive.” In the English language, it is cognate with German Schloss.
If an utterance contains several slots, one of them must be mapped to the respective entity. Built-in slot types map to amount, duration, or numeric values. Custom slot types are supported and can be used to map slots. For example, a location slot can be used to mark locations in utterances. And the utterance must be a sequence. It should be possible to map multiple slots to the same entity. This is possible by using custom slot types.
A slot consists of two components: the data paths and the operation issue machinery. In the VLIW world, this relationship is implied, but in general, slots are used for the same morpheme. In some instances, slots are referred to as the execute pipeline. In other situations, a slot may be used for a specific assignment or job position. If you work at a newspaper, for instance, a chief copy editor has a slot in the office. Another example is an airport, which uses slots for its flights.
