It is a gambling game, so most games require players to put an amount of money into the pot (called a forced bet) before they are dealt cards. The highest hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever it is your turn to bet, you may say &#8220;raise&#8221; if you want to place a higher bet than the last player. If you raise, the other players must either call your new bet or fold. You can also simply say &#8220;check&#8221; if you do not want to bet at all.<\/p>\n<p>After each player has received two hole cards, a third card is flipped over on the table. This is called the flop. A round of betting begins, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.<\/p>\n<p>There are several different types of poker hands. The highest is a royal flush, which is four matching cards of the same rank in a single suit. The second highest is a straight, which contains five consecutive cards of the same rank in a single suite. The lowest hand is a pair, which contains two distinct cards of the same rank. High card breaks ties in case of multiple pairs or other high hands.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to keep track of your own cards and the cards that others have in order to calculate your odds of having a good hand.
